ADMISSION OF HONORARY ALDERMAN OR ALDERWOMAN OF THE BOROUGH

1.       At the conclusion of the Annual Council Meeting and associated Committee meetings, the Mayor will announce that the meeting has been convened to consider the admission of Honorary Aldermen/ Alderwomen of the Borough.

 

The Mayor will then invite the Leader of the Council to move the following motion:

 

That the Council confers the title of Honorary Alderman or Honorary Alderwoman, in accordance with section 249 (1) of the Local Government Act 1972 and the criteria approved by the Council on 23rd February 2022, on the following persons:

(1)      Tony Jones, for having rendered eminent service on Reading Borough Council as a member for the Redlands, Battle, and Whitley wards, including two terms as Mayor of Reading and having held senior political office.

(2)      Jeanette Skeats, for having rendered eminent service on Reading Borough Council as a member for the Thames ward, including a term as Mayor of Reading and having held senior political office.

 

(3)      Joe Williams, for having rendered eminent service on the former Berkshire County Council as a member for the Katesgrove ward and having an exceptional record of community service and leadership.

 

Other Councillors will be invited to speak.

 

2.       The Mayor will take a vote on a show of hands.

 

3.       If the motion is carried, the Mayor will invite Tony Jones, Jeanette Skeats and Joe Williams and the Chief Executive to sign the Book of Honorary Aldermen and Alderwomen.

PRESENTATION AND SPEECHES

4.       The Mayor will present Tony Jones, Jeanette Skeats and Joe Williams with an illuminated scroll and invite each of them to address the Council.

 

5.       The Mayor will announce that the business for the Council Meeting is concluded.

 

EVERYONE WILL STAND AS THE MAYOR LEAVES THE AUDITORIUM.

 

6.       The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Freemen/Aldermen will process out, passing by the Mayor’s Escort, Deputy Mayor’s Escort who will join the procession. The procession will leave by the Centre Doors. Councillors will follow the procession.

 

All guests will stay seated for a few minutes.
